Veiled Virgin In Medallion – Alabaster – Woman – Footprint – Sculpture – Antique Work (at Least 19th Century)
Veiled Virgin in a Medallion
Carved alabaster with halo
Antique work (at least 19th century, possibly earlier)
Alabaster medallion depicting a veiled Virgin in right profile, recognizable by her simple veil, her slightly raised halo, and the restrained gentleness of her features.
It is a devotional image, similar to Mater Dolorosa types, without definitively establishing a direct identification.
A notable feature: the medallion and the pedestal are carved from the same stone, with perfect continuity of material and patina. This indicates simultaneous creation, characteristic of an early ensemble rather than a later addition.
This type of turned alabaster pedestal is typical of pre-19th-century production, which justifies a cautious dating: at least 19th century, but very likely earlier.
The reverse of the medallion, carefully smoothed, bears an old perforation.
The surface displays a matte, even, and homogeneous patina throughout—including the reworked areas of the base—evidence of age and previous handling.
Condition:
Good overall condition.
Signs of wear consistent with age, minor surface scratches, slight alterations to the edge of the medallion, and a small old repair at the base.
Stable surface.
Beautiful patina.
Dimensions:
42 x 24 x 11 cm
