Pair of decorative patinated bronze vases/bowls, after Claude Michel, known as Clodion,
France, circa 1900.
A pair of finely patinated bronze decorative vases, baluster-shaped, each resting on a gadrooned foot and a black marble base (known as Belgian black marble).
The body of each vase is adorned with a continuous high-relief bacchanalian scene, depicting antique figures in a dancing circle: draped bacchantes and nude satyrs, animated by a rhythmic and sensual movement characteristic of the Neoclassical vocabulary inspired by Antiquity.
The composition, remarkably lively, incorporates famous Clodion models, with an elegant treatment of anatomy, flowing draperies, and a circular narrative structure. The vases feature an everted rim highlighted by a row of gadroons, handles with antique-inspired scrollwork, and a beautiful, nuanced warm brown patina, revealing lighter highlights in places that accentuate the relief.
Dimensions (each):
- Total height: approx. 44 cm
- Base: approx. 14 x 14 cm
Condition:
– Good overall condition
– Note: slight pitting and signs of wear, not serious, consistent with age and the nature of the materials.
