19th century France: "Ebonite desktop calendar/thermometer", wood and molded ebonite 28 X 19.5 cm. Despite its condition, broken thermometer and its oxidized plate, plate of the back foot disunited, this object is extremely decorative with its bas-relief decoration typically Third Republic of floral scrolls and dragon of Far Eastern inspiration... Its material, the ebonite, so named for its resemblance to ebony, is one of the first plastic materials obtained by the vulcanization of latex.
