Léopold Pierre Antoine Savine (1861–1934)
Large white marble sculpture signed “L. Savine”
Dimensions:
Height: 70 cm
Base width: 19.5 cm
Base depth: 19.5 cm
Important white marble sculpture depicting a female allegorical figure of music, holding a lyre. The work stands out for its formal elegance and its highly accomplished sense of movement. The young woman is portrayed in a graceful and animated pose, based on a subtle contrapposto, while the deeply carved draperies wrap fluidly around the body, suggesting a light breeze that brings the entire composition to life.
The face, with its soft and idealized features, reflects the enduring influence of late Neoclassicism, still very much present in French sculpture at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The refined treatment of volumes and the mastery of transitions attest to a sculptor fully trained in academic traditions.
The marble, of fine quality and delicate grain, probably of Italian origin (Carrara), displays a smooth and even patina that enhances the precision of the modelling and the virtuosity of the drapery work.
The sculpture is signed “L. Savine” at the base and is attributed to Léopold Pierre Antoine Savine, a French sculptor active from the late 19th century through the early decades of the 20th century, known for his decorative figures, allegories, and idealized subjects created for bourgeois interiors and ornamental décors.
Very fine overall condition.
