Bronze Plaque In Bas-relief - Ferdinand Barbedienne Greece - Sculpture - 19th Century

Artist: Ferdinand Barbedienne
Bronze plaque with a nuanced brown patina decorated in bas-relief with a procession with the Panathenaea of the Parthenon

Founder Ferdinand Barbedienne

19th century

Plaque hung on a walnut frame

This bas-relief is inspired by a fragment of the frieze of the Parthenon, entitled the "Ergastines". The scene represents young Athenian girls, the Ergastines, participating in the procession of the Great Panathenaea, during which they offered an embroidered tunic to the statue of Athena. They are shown here welcomed by two figures framing the ritual. The original frieze, commissioned by Pericles and executed under the direction of Phidias, measured 160 meters and represented this procession which took place every four years.
