Joseph-françois A. Belin – Sculpture “myssia” – Bronze On A Griotte Marble Pedestal, 19th Century
Artist: Joseph-françois A.belin
A magnificent antique bronze sculpture depicting a young woman—the nude goddess “Myssia”—emerging from the bath, delicately holding a drape and leaning against a rock.
The work rests on an elegant circular base made of griotte marble, adorned with a plaque engraved with “Myssia (By Belin Sculptr).” This sculpture corresponds to the model from Greek mythology, Mysia, a sacred title given to the goddess Demeter (goddess of agriculture and harvests), who had a famous temple dedicated to her under this name near Sparta. Created by the French sculptor Joseph-François Belin, an artist active in the 19th century and known for his decorative compositions inspired by antiquity and mythological figures.
The sculpture displays beautiful modeling, particularly in the rendering of the body, the drapery, and the hair. The antique brown patina elegantly highlights the forms and details. The signature “Belin” is visible on the base. The piece as a whole is a very elegant decorative work, typical of 19th-century French academic sculpture. Artist
Good overall condition with a beautiful antique patina. Signs of aging consistent with the piece’s age.
