Large Covered Vase Made Of Green Serpentine (jade?) Decorated With Phoenixes And Chains – China – 20th Century

Important Chinese lidded vase in carved green serpentine (possibly jade), in an archaic style, featuring a rich decoration inspired by the repertoire of ancient Chinese ritual vases.

Large in size, the piece consists of a globular body resting on a tall fluted pedestal, surmounted by a long, slightly flared neck and a substantial domed lid.

The main sides of the body are adorned with large phoenixes carved in relief, their wings spread wide. The shoulders and neck feature several bands of finely incised geometric and zoomorphic motifs (birds/phoenixes), in the style of archaic Chinese decoration.

Particularly remarkable, the piece is embellished with carved zoomorphic handles from which hang long, movable stone chains ending in openwork pendants.

The lid is crowned by a group of two fantastical animals facing each other, carved in the round.

The stone displays a beautiful, deeply nuanced, and translucent green-gray hue, crisscrossed by veins, inclusions, and natural color variations.

Due to its size, the profusion of its decoration, and the complexity of its openwork and movable elements, this piece possesses a significant sculptural and decorative presence.
