Artist: Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912)
This patinated bronze sculpture represents a woman sitting on a chair and a child standing near her. The mother is dressed in antique style and originally holds an object in her hands, perhaps a book. The sculpture is executed with great attention to detail, as can be seen, for example, in the figure's hair or fingers.

Academicism, France, 2nd half of the 19th century. Signed "Mr. Moreau".

Height 34 cm, length 28.5 cm, depth 17 cm.

Mathurin Moreau (1822 Dijon - 1912 Paris): French sculptor from a family of sculptors located in Dijon. His father Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau is a sculptor, as are his brothers Hippolyte and Auguste. He was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1841 and studied with sculptors such as Jules Ramey and Auguste Dumont. In 1842, he won second place in the prestigious Prix de Rome competition. He made his debut at the Salon of French Artists in 1848. He is the author of numerous cabinet sculptures as well as monuments and monumental fountains which today adorn many French and foreign cities, such as Paris, Geneva, Quebec or Buenos Areas.

Good state of conservation, rubbing of the patina, no object in the woman's hands.
