Pair Of Busts Of Voltaire And Rousseau In Patinated Bronze, Marble, And Knurled Brass – Late 18th Century

An elegant pair of busts depicting the philosophers Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, dating from the late 18th century or the very early 19th century.

Both figures are cast in bronze with a beautiful dark brown patina, each resting on a knurled pedestal, which in turn is mounted on a gray marble column.

The columns rest on knurled brass bases, adorned with delicate decorative chains, lending the ensemble a distinctly neoclassical elegance.

The sculptural work is particularly meticulous, especially in the rendering of the faces, hair, and clothing. The chiseling, fine and vigorous, features highly precise details with particularly vivid reliefs, attesting to the high quality of the craftsmanship.

The knurled brass elements—characteristic of the Louis XVI style and still widely used during the Empire period—feature a refined decoration that contributes to the elegance of these frames.
