Arts & Crafts Lamp By W.a.s. Benson - Bronze, Opalescent Glassware, About 1900
Elegant articulated table lamp, of Arts & Crafts inspiration, attributed to the workshop of W.A.S. Benson, a major figure in late 19th-century English lighting, renowned for the quality of his metal creations and his pioneering role in domestic lighting.
This piece features a sober and functional line, typical of the Benson aesthetic:
a finely crafted brass/bronze structure, enlivened by a curved potency underlined by a spiral wrap, a formal signature found on several models from the manufacture.
The articulated system allows precise adjustment of the lighting, reinforcing the object's utilitarian yet decorative character.
It is topped with lightly opalescent glassware, diffusing a soft, warm light, perfectly suited to mood lighting.
Note:
- original key switch in spirit .
- absence of branding, but consistent attribution to Benson or a nearby workshop, both in design and formal vocabulary
- harmonious proportions (height: 31 cm)
The lamp has undergone a complete restoration in the workshop:
- full rewiring to current standards .
- checking and putting back into operation
- respect of original patinas
It is now perfectly functional, ready for immediate installation and use.
AppreciationThis type of luminaire perfectly embodies the Arts & Crafts spirit:
an honest aesthetic, where structure becomes decoration, and every detail serves the function.
The models attributed to Benson - or stemming from his influence - are today highly sought-after, as much for their craftsmanship as for their timeless modernity.
A piece at once useful, elegant and heritage, ideal for an interior sensitive to objects steeped in history.
