Solid Silver Smoking Lamp, Art Nouveau Artichoke Design, Circa 1900, English, Naturalist Style

A rare and charming small solid silver table candlestick, depicting an artichoke in remarkable naturalistic silversmithing, from the Art Nouveau period, circa 1900.

The artichoke, crafted from repoussé silver and finely chased, rests on foliage that forms the base. The various elements, made of cast and repoussé silver, display exceptional craftsmanship, with particularly meticulous assembly.

This smoking accessory features an ingenious ignition system: the body of the artichoke serves as the fuel reservoir, supplying a central wick. Three small removable lighters, topped with buds and originally containing tow, were used to draw the flame to light cigars and cigarettes.

The set is complete, free of damage, and in excellent condition.

Several tiny hallmarks are present on the base as well as on each of the three lighters. They remain difficult to read and, to date, do not allow for the formal identification of the silversmith.

The design and quality of the workmanship suggest English or German production from the late 19th or early 20th century, likely intended for the British market.

A particularly refined curiosity, reflecting the art of living and smoking accessories of the Belle Époque.
