Spelter Sculpture Night Light "the Village Festival" – Géo Maxim – Circa 1910 Art Nouveau

Artist: Géo Maxim
A charming nightlight in patinated spelter, depicting a children's scene entitled "The Village Festival," by Géo Maxim, active at the turn of the 20th century. The piece rests on a rectangular base bearing a brass plaque engraved with the title and the artist's name. This piece is firmly rooted in the tradition of decorative lighting from the Belle Époque, distributed by Parisian department stores (Au Bon Marché, Grands Magasins du Louvre, Printemps), where certain successful sculptures were occasionally adapted into light fixtures, offered for limited seasonal periods. The base is signed by another sculptor, a common practice in foundry variations, where the same model could be adapted, reproduced, or embellished according to the decorative and commercial trends of the time. The lamp is topped with a small, lantern-style lampshade in openwork gilt brass, adorned with multicolored cut-glass cabochons, a characteristic feature of these decorative pieces produced between 1900 and 1920. This type of lantern can be found on electric nightlights, candlesticks, and oil lamps. The lamp has a beautiful, even patina, befitting its age. The wiring has been completely redone with a discreet, textile-covered cable, in keeping with the aesthetics of the period.
