Anthropomorphic Pyrogenic Candlestick Made Of Bronze And Brass – Gnome Or Woodsman – 19th Century
A unique candleholder with a pyrogenic function dating from the second half of the 19th century, depicting a small anthropomorphic bronze figure resembling a gnome or a wood sprite from folk imagery.
Bearded and wearing a cap, the figure is clad in a tunic resembling an animal pelt. Its picturesque depiction is also reminiscent of little woodcutters or characters from folk tales and legends.
With one hand, he holds the candleholder, while the other holds a brass container used to store matches. The circular, stepped base features a framed slot designed to hold an interchangeable scraper, which was once made of a small metal plate or sandpaper.
The figurine is crafted from finely worked bronze, while the candle holder, the match container, and the base are made of brass.
The piece displays a beautiful antique patina, highlighting the details of the costume and the character’s expression. The underside of the base retains its cardboard backing as well as a fragment of the original purplish silk, offering interesting evidence of its original finish.
A curious object full of character, combining the world of 19th-century fantasy figures with everyday accessories.
