Cobalt-blue Cut Bohemian Crystal Hallway Lantern, 19th Century, Bronze & Brass

A rare cobalt-blue Bohemian crystal lantern dating from the mid-19th century.

The body, shaped like a Medici vase, is crafted from particularly thick, high-quality crystal. The design plays on the contrast between the frosted cobalt blue areas, which filter and soften the light, and the deeply carved and polished motifs that gleam.

The design combines foliage, trefoil motifs, lancets, and interlacing in a historicist style, blending neo-Gothic and Orientalist influences.

The frame is made of repoussé and stamped bronze and brass, with a chain suspension, a simple central finial, and a large upper disc of cobalt blue crystal, whose shape echoes the design elements of older lanterns.

The piece as a whole displays exceptional craftsmanship, both in the crystal work and in the frame.
