Neo-gothic Dragon Oil Lamp, Second Empire Nap III, 19th-century Artistic Zinc With Green Patina
A Second Empire-era oil nightlight depicting a partially armored neo-Gothic dragon, made of cast zinc with a green patina. Reflecting the 19th-century Romantic fascination with the Middle Ages, this piece perfectly illustrates the Neo-Gothic revival that characterized the decorative arts under Napoleon III.
The dragon, with its particularly expressive modeling, extends its long, scaly neck and stylized wings to support an elegant red blown-glass oil cup, shaped like a Medici vase, suspended by three small chains.
