"Orientalist Pyrogen In Spelter With Polychrome Patina – Water Carrier - Colonial Art "
Orientalist pyrogen in finely carved spelter representing a water carrier, standing, barefoot, carrying a balance on her shoulder from which are suspended two baskets woven by fine twisted metal cords. The baskets served as receptacles for matches or wicks, typical of decorative pyrogens of the Belle Époque. The polychrome patina, shaded with browns and blacks, highlights the work of the draperies and the expressive details of the face. This piece, although made of spelter, recalls in its style and finesse the Viennese lead or bronze productions of the same period, while presenting the characteristics of a French work, probably around 1900. Work testifying to the orientalist and naturalist taste then in vogue at this time. Period: Late 19th - early 20th century Material: Spelter with polychrome patina shades of brown and black. Dimensions: Height 13.5cm Condition: Very good overall condition, slight wear to the patina.
