Pair Of Candelabers With Figures Of Paradise Birds, Russia, 19th Century
A monumental pair of gilded bronze candelabra, each topped by a sculptural figure of a bird of paradise with outstretched wings. The composition of each piece is centered around a central shaft richly adorned with reliefs, rising from a multi-tiered base resting on curved feet decorated with elaborate floral motifs. The upper section consists of a crown of elegantly curved light arms, terminating in lampshades and adorned with elongated, transparent crystal pendants, which accentuate the play of light and lend the ensemble a solemn character.
The bird figures are rendered with particular attention to the three-dimensionality of the plumage and the dynamic quality of their profiles, bringing these works closer to the traditions of Russian historicism and the Romantic interpretation of natural motifs characteristic of 19th-century decorative arts. The decoration on the bodies incorporates stylized foliage, fluting, and medallions, characteristic of high-quality bronze works from this period.
