Marino Di Teana (1920–2012) – Relief: Spatial Fugue No. 1 Bis – 1972 – One-of-a-kind Piece
Francesco Marino di Teana (1920–2012), an Italian-born French sculptor, painter and architect who trained in Argentina before settling in Paris in 1953, is recognised as one of the leading figures of geometric and monumental sculpture in the second half of the 20th century.
Trained in architecture and fine arts, he developed a distinctive approach to sculpture during the 1950s, exploring the relationships between matter, void and space.
His theory, known as “tri-unitary logic”, considers the void an integral part of the work, just as essential as the surrounding volumes. His artistic research led him to create monumental sculptures as well as reliefs, in which he applied his architectural principles on a more intimate scale.
Created in 1972, this stainless steel bas-relief, entitled Relief Fugue spatiale n° 1 bis, combines geometric elements through an interplay of overlapping planes, volumes and changing reflections of light.
This is a unique work, documented in the artist's catalogue raisonné under No. 1036.
