Serge Benoit – R1 – Abstract Bas-relief In Mixed Media

Serge Benoit (1937–2025) – R1 – Mixed-Media Bas-Relief – 1989

Serge Benoit, a French painter and sculptor born in Le Mans in 1937, began working in sculpture in the early 1960s, following training in decorative metalwork and practical experience in the workshop.

Initially working in a figurative style, he turned towards abstraction and Constructivism in 1974, developing a distinctive artistic language inspired by the world of machinery and the relationship between man and industrial society.

His work is characterised by a profound understanding of materials and their properties. Wood, metal, oxidised sheet metal, hammered brass and composite materials are worked, assembled and patinated in compositions combining geometric rigour with a sensitive exploration of material and texture.

This approach is particularly evident in his bas-reliefs, which occupy a space between painting and sculpture, exploring the expressive possibilities of assembling different materials.

Serge Benoit exhibited at the Musée Rodin, the Grand Palais, UNESCO and the Palais des Papes in Avignon, among other prestigious venues. Several of his works were acquired by the Fonds national d'art contemporain (FNAC), the French National Contemporary Art Collection.
