Expressionist Painting, Almost Still Life, Signed Philippe Martinery
Artist: Philippe Martinery
Oil on canvas, 35 cm x 27 cm, sold with its American-style frame (40 cm x 32 cm), signed lower right Philippe Martinery, depicting a near still life! Very good condition. Sold with invoice/certificate. In this canvas of almost intimate size, Philippe Martinery creates a suspended atmosphere, like a held breath just before something happens—or no longer happens. Nothing is decided yet, but everything is already in place. The bottle, upright like a slightly embarrassed witness, seems to want to be forgotten. The glass, for its part, has clearly capitulated first. As for the revolver, placed with a calm that is almost more unsettling than if it were screaming, it brings with it that scent of drama that hangs in empty bars at hours when one should no longer be standing. In the background, the chair wobbles slightly, as if hesitating between welcoming someone or admitting that this someone will not return. The shutters filter a light that hasn't yet decided which way to turn. Everything here tells a story… but Martinery stops just before the final sentence. Therein lies the power—and the rarity—of this almost still life. A scene that shows nothing, yet suggests everything. A moment captured between a hazy before and an uncertain after. A painting where the viewer becomes the author of the ending… with that ironic smile the artist always places there, even in moments of uncertainty.
