Charles-guillaume Diehl (1811–1885) – Ebony Desk/dressing Table – Napoleon III

An elegant work table or dressing table in ebonized wood by Charles-Guillaume Diehl (1811–1885), one of the leading Parisian cabinetmakers of the Second Empire.

Of elegant curving form, it is decorated with brass stringing and inlays, together with an “S.E.” monogram set within a gilt cartouche.

The hinged top opens to reveal an interior in figured maple fitted with a mirror. The front incorporates a sliding drawer. The table stands on four slender cabriole legs terminating in bronze sabots.

The lock is signed and inscribed:

“DIEHL – 19, rue Michel-le-Comte, Paris”

Charles-Guillaume Diehl was one of the leading Parisian cabinetmakers of the Second Empire. Established at 19 rue Michel-le-Comte from 1853, he was renowned for the quality of his luxury furniture and exhibited at the major international exhibitions of the 19th century.
