Children's Orthopedic Corset Made Of Leather And Metal – Late 19th – Early 20th Century
A remarkable antique orthopedic corset, likely intended for a child, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
Made of thick leather molded and stiffened by a riveted metal frame, it features a particularly striking anatomical silhouette, reminiscent of a miniature suit of armor.
The back is entirely perforated with multiple circular openings designed to promote ventilation. It also features a curious little hinged flap, likely allowing access to the skin without removing the entire device, particularly for the patient’s care or comfort.
The front panel features an opening and lacing system that allows the corset to be put on and adjusted.
This type of device was used to support or correct certain deformities of the torso and spine, at a time when orthopedics relied heavily on rigid, custom-made devices.
Beyond its medical function, this object now possesses a remarkable sculptural presence. Its anthropomorphic shape, the deep patina of the leather, and the metalwork make it a particularly interesting piece for a cabinet of curiosities, a collection of antique medical instruments, or an unconventional decorative item.
In good overall condition for an object of this nature, with wear, deformation, and signs of past use.
Over time, the leather has become very stiff, adding to its sculptural quality
