Large Chinese Wooden Stool, Carved And Openwork – Dragon Design – Circa 1900
A spectacular Chinese carved wooden stool, likely made in the late 19th or early 20th century.
It features a remarkable cylindrical backrest entirely carved in high relief and openwork, displaying a profusion of dragons winding their way through stylized clouds and plant motifs.
The carving, particularly dense and deep, unfolds across several decorative registers separated by geometric friezes and beaded moldings.
The upper section, richly adorned with architectural motifs and openwork carvings, supports a molded square top.
The entire piece rests on three carved legs decorated with fantastical creatures, which enhance the theatrical character of this piece.
The dark patina highlights the reliefs and accentuates the depth of the carving.
This stool is a true curiosity, as interesting for the virtuosity of its woodworking as for its exceptional decorative presence.
Condition: generally in good condition, with a few cracks and splits that have appeared in some of the carved elements, likely due to temperature fluctuations. These minor imperfections in no way detract from the piece’s decorative quality.
