La Roche Laffitte (born In 1943) – The Constellations
Two works by La Roche Laffitte, depicting constellations and mythological figures of the night sky.
The artist reinterprets the imagery of historical celestial charts, creating a fantastical and colourful world populated by real and imaginary animals, mythological characters and allegorical figures.
Among the recognisable figures are the Unicorn (Monoceros), Orion, the Great Dog (Canis Major), the Little Dog (Canis Minor), the Hare (Lepus) and the Hydra, accompanied by numerous small golden stars.
The compositions are distinguished by delicate colour gradations, precise draughtsmanship and colourful geometric borders, deliberately crossed by certain figures.
Several versions of the Unicorn composition are known, reflecting the artist's interest in celestial imagery.
La Roche Laffitte collaborated with French decorator and antiques dealer Jean-Jacques Beaumé, whose collections included works by the artist.
Both works signed L. R. Laffitte.
