"very Large Studio Plaster" By Jos De Decker (prix De Rome, 1941)

Artist: Jos De Decker

Jos De Decker (1912–2000) – Eva, 1940–1941 – Original Plaster – Prix de Rome 1941

Important plaster sculpture by Jos De Decker (1912–2000), entitled Eva and created in 1940–1941.

Standing over two metres high, this monumental female figure is the original plaster sculpture from the artist’s studio. It bears Jos De Decker’s signature on the base, together with the inscription “Prix de Rome 1941.”

Eva is the work for which Jos De Decker was awarded the Second Prix de Rome for Sculpture in 1941. A bronze version of the work is now held in the heritage collection of Knokke-Heist.

The sculpture is accompanied by a certificate signed by Ann De Decker, dated 1 September 2024, confirming that it is the original plaster from Jos De Decker’s studio. The certificate also states that the work may not be reproduced in bronze or in any other material.

The work is referenced in Aimé Stroobants, Jos De Decker, 1997, p. 17, and illustrated p. 56. Its provenance from the artist’s studio is also recorded in the De Vuyst auction catalogue.

With its clean lines, generous volumes and elegant posture, Eva exemplifies Jos De Decker’s figurative sculpture and his exploration of the female form.
