18-karat Yellow Gold Ring Featuring A British Gold Sovereign—george V—early 20th Century
18-karat yellow gold ring featuring a British gold sovereign—George V—Early 20th century
A significant yellow gold ring, set with a British gold sovereign bearing the effigy of King George V (1910–1936).
Description
The coin, featuring the sovereign’s profile facing left, bears the Latin inscription “GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP,” meaning “George V, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India.”
It is held in place by four prongs on a particularly original openwork setting, composed of an interlacing pattern of chains and circular rings in yellow gold, forming an elegant geometric design.
The ring bears hallmarks attesting to goldsmithing work, though their precise interpretation remains to be confirmed.
British coins are traditionally struck in 22-karat gold (916.7 parts per thousand). The setting appears to be 18-karat gold (750 parts per thousand), subject to confirmation of the hallmarks.
A distinctive ring, combining the prestige of British gold coins with a highly original openwork setting.
