19th-century Carved Wooden Pulpit Elements — Christ The Good Shepherd And The Four Evangelists
Set of carved wooden pulpit elements — 19th century
A beautiful set of six carved wooden pulpit elements from the 19th century, with a brown patina, including Christ the Good Shepherd, the four Evangelists, and a richly carved pediment.
In the center, Christ the Good Shepherd is depicted standing, wearing a hat and carrying a sheep on his shoulders, whose legs he is holding. His loose-fitting garment, with deep folds, falls onto a carved platform modeled after rocky ground. Height: 63 cm.
The four evangelists, dressed in long draped robes, each rest on a console adorned with their symbolic attribute:
– Saint Luke, depicted as bearded, with a winged ox carved beneath his feet.
– Saint Matthew, holding a long scroll, accompanied by a winged human figure.
– Saint John, depicted as a young, beardless man, holding a quill and a book, with an eagle on his console.
– Saint Mark, depicted as a bearded man, writing with a quill on an unfurled scroll, accompanied by a winged lion.
Height of each of the Evangelists: approximately 52 cm.
The carved and openwork pediment features a design of large volutes, acanthus leaves, and leafy branches. In the center is a chalice surmounted by a flaming, radiant heart, set against a background of crosses and other religious symbols.
Dimensions: length 60 cm; height 48 cm.
The piece shows signs of age and wear. There are slight losses and possible traces of previous restorations, particularly on the protruding parts. The photographs allow one to appreciate the details and the state of preservation.
