Russian Silver Sugar Bowl With Cloisonné Enamel, Russia, Moscow, 1896–1908
An egg-shaped silver sugar bowl resting on elegant leaf-shaped feet, featuring a movable handle decorated with enamel ornaments. The surface of the body is covered with a complex cloisonné enamel composition featuring a polychrome floral design arranged in arched vertical panels rising rhythmically from the base toward the rim. The color palette includes rich shades of cobalt, azure, turquoise, white, and red on a gold background featuring filigree and granulation. The upper rim is highlighted by a frieze of light blue enamel dots, accentuating the purity of the profile. The interior is gilded, creating a refined contrast with the multicolored enamel and enhancing the object’s decorative effect.
The composition and virtuosity of execution attest to the high level of the Moscow school of jewelry at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which was oriented toward the revival of national artistic traditions in the spirit of the Russian Style.
