Khamseh Rug, 120 X 155 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool By The Khamseh Nomads, Iran, 19th Century
Artist: Tribu Des Khamseh
Antique rug from the Shiraz region, hand-knotted by the Khamseh nomadic tribes.
An artifact of Persian nomadic culture.
It measures 155 cm in length and 120 cm in width.
The rug was made in the early 19th century.
The design is completely symmetrical throughout the field of the rug, including the medallion and the inverted squares.
These polygons are typical of this region and the work of the various ethnic groups living there.
A menagerie—horses, poultry, snakes, goats, camels, and more—is often woven into a profusion of plant motifs, all arranged in a geometric pattern.
Stylized flowers accompany two bustards standing proudly on either side.
Others are depicted on the field, accompanied by goats and surrounded by a profusion of stylized flowers.
The bustard is one of the iconic birds of the great plains of Persia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
The dyes used for coloring come primarily from plants and minerals—ochre, indigo, madder....
The inspiration for these motifs comes largely from local folklore and superstitions.
But also very often from the frescoes and columns of ancient Persepolis, located near this area where the tribes used to graze their herds.
The design is enhanced by a wide border and two simple floral braids that create a stunning effect, allowing the central motifs to take center stage.
The wool used is a blend of sheep, goat, and camel wool, and horsehair may also be present.
The Khamseh tribe originates from the Shiraz area in Fars Province in southwestern Iran.
This rug is in very good condition; a collector’s item, it is a true artifact of the folk and tribal culture of these regions.
A rare piece in this condition and for the quality of its craftsmanship—perfect for enthusiasts.
It can be displayed on a wall or laid on the floor!
This rug has been professionally cleaned using eco-friendly methods.
