Aït Ouaouzguite Berber rug, 149 x 260 cm, pre-1950, hand-knotted wool from the High Atlas Mountains, Morocco.
Ouaouzguite Berber rugs are distinguished from one another by three types of weaving techniques:
- The Tazerbite, which uses a symmetrical knot weave on two warps.
- The Glaoua rug from the High Atlas, which is crafted by combining three techniques: knotting, flat weaving, and cord weaving.
- The Zanifi, a more rustic and very sturdy flat tapestry-style rug used for transporting grain.
Our model is crafted with high-density knotted wool, and the embroidered decorative elements are typical of Atlas culture.
# Both antique and modern Moroccan rugs are still dyed using natural dyes, a practice that dates back to the conservation requirements established in the early 20th century by Marshal Liautey—an architect of the French Protectorate—who tasked Prosper Ricard with preserving Moroccan traditions and safeguarding and restoring the country’s cultural heritage.
Colors:
Primarily red (madder), yellow (saffron), and blue (indigo)
Traditionally, Moroccan rugs were knotted exclusively by women for use in their own homes.
They were used to adorn floors and served as seat covers, bedspreads, or blankets during the colder months.
The rugs are rich in symbolism and often tell the story of the woman who created each piece.
Each rug takes about 20 to 30 days to be hand-woven, and the design is always completely original—no two rugs are ever identical!
The diamond shape is a motif that frequently appears in decoration, ornamentation, knotted rugs, and other artistic works, not only because of its decorative form, but also—and above all—for its symbolic meaning:
