Baluch Rug, 93 X 153 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, From Iran, Circa 1980, In Perfect Condition.
Artist: Baloutches
Hand-knotted Baloch rug in wool on cotton, circa 1980.
It measures 93 cm wide by 153 cm long.
Colors: gold, camel, rust, and brown.
Slight abrash at the bottom, a change in shade.
Knotted in the Persian knot.
Three large medallions, typical of these rugs, are placed on a brown field and surrounded by a thin border of small niches, minarets, and ethnic motifs.
The whole is edged with two bands of Caucasian foliage.
A neat and elegant fringe finish is found at each end of the rug.
This piece helps us understand how, with such creativity, figures, plants, and figurative scenes can be transformed and transcribed into legible abstract motifs by nomadic tribes whose school and knotting techniques exist only through oral and manual transmission.
One is led to believe that Baloch rugs originated in the Balochistan, which is not at all the case.
They are knotted further north, in Khorasan, in Iran, on the Russo-Iranian border, and the most beautiful models are even given the name of Mezhad, the capital of Khorasan.
These are nomadic rugs, so the sizes are quite small. Until recently, the warp and weft were always made of wool, but the use of cotton has supplanted wool.
The knot used remains the Persian knot.
Our model is made of very high-quality wool.
The large number of motifs used shows the Persian influence, and the geometric patterns link them to the Central Asian rug family, which is not the case.
The field is regularly camel or burgundy in color, especially for prayer rugs.
The mihrabs, for the "prayer" type, are always rectangular, unlike the rounded niches knotted on prayer rugs seen in all other regions and the stepped niches of some Turkish prayer rugs.
The interior decoration often reveals a very elaborate geometric design accompanied by numerous symbols.
Dimensions: Width: 93 cm (36") x Length: 153 cm (60").
This rug has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
