Jean Michel Diebolt (1779–1825) – Stormy Sea, Oil On Canvas, Signed And Dated 1817

Jean Michel Diebolt (1779–c. 1825)

Stormy Seascape

Oil on canvas, 37.5 x 47 cm

Signed lower right: J.M. Diebolt, dated 1817

The painting in question, depicting a stormy seascape, is the work of the French painter Jean Michel Diebolt (c. 1779–1825), an artist known for his depictions of marine and animal subjects. The work, dated 1817 and signed in the lower right corner, masterfully captures the fury of the elements and the human drama associated with seafaring.

Diebolt trained under Joseph-Benoît Suvée and Jean-Louis Demarne, two masters who influenced his artistic sensibility and his ability to vividly render scenes of daily life and animated landscapes. In 1824, his works were exhibited at the prestigious Salon, attesting to his fame and painterly skill.

The painting’s composition unfolds with great dynamism: the dark, stormy sky gives way to a beam of light, while the raging waves crash against the cliffs. In the background, an imposing coastal tower can be seen, a silent witness to the unfolding tragedy. In the foreground, desperate figures attempt to rescue the shipwrecked, in a scene of intense drama and expressiveness.

The work is characterized by a masterful use of light and color, elements that lend depth and movement to the scene. The contrast between the cool tones of the sea and the warmer tones of the mainland creates a highly evocative effect, typical of Diebolt’s finest works.
