A splendid view of St. Mark’s Basin, considered the heart and soul of Venice, as well as the most significant representation of the Venetian spirit.
Overlooking the waters in front of St. Mark’s Square, in succession, are the Riva degli Schiavoni, the Doge’s Palace, the two famous columns, and the Marciana National Library.
In the distance, one can glimpse the mouth of the Grand Canal with the Church of the Salute and the Punta della Dogana.
A fantastic and surreal place of absolute beauty, which has inspired an endless host of artists captivated by the indescribable charm of Venice and its monuments.
The artist employs a typically French painting technique, which, with a strikingly effective brushstroke, foreshadows the groundbreaking innovations of the Impressionist masters—many of whom would find the source of their inspiration right here in Venice.
The vivid colors, with the markedly warm hues of the buildings, contrast with the almost electric blue sky.
The extraordinary luminosity of the painting is emphasized by the play of light and shadow created by the setting sun.
The work clearly displays the unmistakable painting style of the great French master Félix Ziem, one of the most important exponents of the Barbizon School. Following a trip to Venice, he was captivated by the city’s beauty and by how well-suited its views were to being captured on canvas. In fact, he painted a considerable series of Venetian views, always with a highly personal color palette, accentuated by light that is at times soft and at others dazzling, and featuring the typical vibrant hues that distinguish his painting.
The success of his “Venices” was truly remarkable, and many French artists drew inspiration from his works.
The painting featured here is signed by an artist very close to the Master and excellently captures all the characteristics of his style.
