The painting, executed with the finest detail, depicts a rare erotic scene with content that was quite risqué by the cultural standards of the time. As his biography reveals, this type of work—created during his final stay in Venice—caused the artist no small amount of trouble, even leading to the arrest of his patron and protector, Giorgio Pisani. His portraits of masked women in lascivious and provocative poses were censored and subsequently banned for the artist. Boscaratti continued to produce them at the request of wealthy Venetian patrons who wished to display them in their palaces for the pleasure of the forbidden. The painting published here, depicting the amorous embraces between two women, should be considered one of his most uninhibited works, brimming with unconventional eroticism.
Biographical Notes on the Artist
Felice Boscaratti was born in Verona in 1721. He trained in the workshops of Pietro Rotari and Matteo Brida. He moved to Rome “to study the classics,” serving an apprenticeship under Maestro Pompeo Batoni. Upon returning to his homeland, the prestige of his works secured him the patronage of Bishop Bragadin, who, upon being elected patriarch in 1778, summoned him to Venice. He eventually moved to Verona, where his career enjoyed moderate success for a time. Having fallen from grace, he left Verona to settle once again in Venice. His work in Venice was subject to censorship, and the content of some of his works led to the arrest of his patron, Giorgio Pisani.
