The Madonna del Latte is one of the most moving and revered sacred images in the Christian tradition and depicts the Virgin Mary nursing the Infant Jesus. This particular image is also known by the Latin term “Virgo Lactans” and the Greek term “Maria Galaktotrophousa.” This iconography, of Eastern origin, transcends artistic boundaries to become a universal symbol of Motherhood, Love, Hope, and Divine Protection.
During the Counter-Reformation in 1543, the Council of Trent imposed strict restrictions on this Marian depiction. The decree “De invocatione, veneratione, et reliquiis sanctorum et sacris imaginibus” imposed restrictions on depictions deemed sensual.
The great censor Carlo Borromeo personally worked to have the Virgin’s breasts covered by modifying images deemed inappropriate. But despite the bans, popular resistance continued, and veneration persisted.
The Madonna del Latte remained the quintessential image of motherhood.
The panel depicted here is a beautiful example of this refined iconography, painted in oil on wood by an Italian artist of the 17th century.
