These two magnificent Venetian views, painted in gouaches on paper in the 18th century, are attributed to Giacomo Guardi and his renowned workshop. They depict two spectacular views of the Grand Canal, one with the Rialto Bridge and the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, the other with the Church of Santa Maria della Carità and the Piazza dell'Accademia. It is interesting to admire the church depicted as it appeared in the 18th century, with its Gothic façade. The pyramidal spires with pinnacles and aedicule spires disappeared in the 19th century, remaining only in period paintings.
Giacomo Guardi (Venice, April 13, 1764 – Venice, November 3, 1835) was a painter specializing in Venetian views. Son of the great view painter Francesco Guardi, he devoted himself to continuing his father's work, painting numerous views and capriccios, following his illustrious father's style, but in a more repetitive and commercial manner, avoiding the laborious works that made his father famous.
His output includes numerous small-format compositions, often gouaches or watercolors on paper, intended to satisfy the requests of wealthy travelers who, upon returning from their Grand Tour, wanted an elegant souvenir of the lagoon city.
Most of his works are small Venetian views, easily transportable, yet demonstrating considerable technical and artistic skill, highly appreciated for their exquisite elegance.
The two splendid gems published here showcase all the distinctive features of his artistic talent, distinguished by their exquisite pictorial quality and unmistakable chromaticism, characterized by luminous tones, where blue is the predominant color. The two gouaches are also of a beautiful size, exceeding the very small size of his standard works. Despite some signs of age, they are in excellent condition, complete with their splendid original gilded frames, typically Venetian in style.
Giacomo Guardi's paintings have seen a significant revaluation in recent years, and even though they are extremely small, his gouaches and watercolors are highly sought after by collectors and fetch significant prices at international auctions.
