View Of A Harbor With Galleons And Fishermen
Artist: Atelier De Claude Joseph Vernet
The large seascape depicted here portrays a lively harbor scene. Bathed in the soft lightof dawn, the scene is set in the inlet of a northern harbor, crisscrossedby galleons and boats of various sizes. In the foreground, a group of fishermen is preparing a long net, while in the background the landscape is dominated by a square-shaped tower. In the shadow of the fortress lies a moored galleon with its sails lowered, flanked by several small boats. Another large vessel plows through the waters in the distance in the morning mist, while a timid sun filters through the clouds. The style of the painting draws on the renewed French landscape tradition of the 18th century, andmore specifically on the work of the painter Claude Joseph Vernet (Avignon 1714 –Paris 1789). A child prodigy, at the age of 14he worked in his father’s workshop, from which he later broke free totravel to Italy and settle in Rome, where he “discovered” the painting and landscape models of Claude Lorrain. During his time in Rome, which lasted a full twenty years, he established himself as one of the leading landscape painters ,specializing in seascapes that were highly appreciated by both the Roman public andvisiting tourists. 1753 was a very important year for the painter, ashe returned to his homeland for a commission from the royal administration for 24 large canvases depicting the main French ports. The canvas presented here is therefore attributable to a painter working in Vernet’s workshop, having assimilated the artist’s taste for the stylistic elements dear to the painter from Avignon and having succeeded inmastering the rendering of light and the characterization of figures and landscape.
