Three Sculpted And Gilded Friezes, Papal States, 17th Century.
Artist: Sculpteur Sur Bois Du Xviie Siècle
Three richly carved Baroque friezes decorated with beautiful gilding. The first depicts an eagle with outstretched wings, resting on an elaborate wavy base. The second features a Mannerist-style frieze decorated with a mask. The third is a carved ornament with racemes and a flower at the top. The sides depict a rampant lion and the Keys of Saint Peter. Although it is difficult to determine the function of these three sculptures, it is possible that they originated as prototypes for the decoration of furniture or important furnishings in 17th-century central Italy, where Baroque styles were dominant.
