The painting depicts one of the typical scenes of the Flemish school, made famous by the family of Belgian artists whose founder was David Teniers. In this case, the artist departs from the more common compositions depicting life inside taverns—with drinkers, smokers, and card players—in favor of a highly detailed composition set outdoors, among the most pleasing and appreciated works in the repertoire of this art form, characterized by distinctly naive traits. A group of horsemen stops in the village to refresh themselves and let their horses rest, while the farriers prepare to replace the horseshoes. The atmosphere is particularly cheerful, as the event breaks the monotony of village life. The painting is executed in oil on zinc plate with exceptional finesse. The perfection in the details of the figures, the animals—including the ever-present little dog—and the characteristic dwellings is rarely found in this type of artwork. The painting’s excellent condition allows for a close examination down to the finest details. The frame is the original one.
