This splendid large canvas depicts the Holy Family resting on a meadow at the edge of the woods, taking a break during their flight to Egypt. A very young Virgin, with a gentle and affectionate gaze, holds out her Child, who welcomes the floral gifts from two little angels with open arms. Joseph, sitting under a tree, observes the scene with a serious and pensive expression, aware of the hardships of the journey. On the ground lie the few possessions gathered before their flight from Nazareth.
The main figures, in the foreground and slightly in shadow, stand out sharply against the luminous landscape behind them, creating an exceptional three-dimensional effect.
The composition is a variation on Simone Cantarini’s famous work on display at the Louvre, which alters the arrangement of the three figures and adds the little angels to enliven the scene.
The painting features truly extraordinary coloration, with particularly vivid shades of red and blue and an excellent combination of colors, accentuated by strong chiaroscuro contrasts. The colors have remained unchanged and perfectly vivid thanks to the artist’s use of the highest-quality pigments—a practice possible only in the most prestigious workshops due to their very high cost.
The attribution to Master Cantarini is further supported by the work’s stylistic elegance, which reflects the taste of the Bolognese Baroque school of Reni and the Carracci, a style he assimilated during his time in the Emilian capital.
For comparison, we are publishing two paintings by Cantarini that share the same pictorial and compositional similarities as the work presented here.
