The canvas depicts the spectacular view of St. Mark's Basin with its iconic palaces and monuments. In the foreground is the majestic Doge's Palace, overlooked by the top of St. Mark's Campanile. Next are the two famous columns on the edge of the Piazza and the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. In the background is the entrance to the Grand Canal with the silhouettes of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana. The artist expresses himself with an airy, luminous painting style, with highly effective brushstrokes in describing the magnificent setting, creating a surreal image of an already fantastic view.
The painting dates back to the early 1900s and is in excellent condition. The canvas is complete with its original carved and lacquered wooden frame with gold trim.
