A self-taught artist, he trained in Italy and by collaborating with Art Nouveau artists in his hometown. A great traveler (Europe, South Tyrol and Italy, China, India), he painted landscapes and watercolors, and lived primarily in Italy, making the Dolomites one of his favorite subjects. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1906 onwards, as well as with the Société des Artistes Indépendants, and participated in numerous solo exhibitions with watercolors and tempera paintings inspired by the Alps and Venice. He played an active role alongside Anquetin in the creation of the Salon des Refusés in 1891. In 1905, at Majorelle's gallery on the rue de Provence in Paris, the artist had assembled some fifty works, primarily watercolors depicting landscapes of the Italian Tyrol, but also cliffs of the Normandy coast. This painting is a perfect example of his favorite subject: the Dolomites. It depicts Monte Pelmo in the morning, a peak in the Alps, located in the Dolomites near Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
