Georges Gonthier, trained by Prix de Rome winner Fortuné Layraud, pursued a career as an art teacher, specializing in landscape painting. In 1907, he became a drawing teacher in Fécamp, then moved to Le Havre in 1914, where he taught at the École Régionale des Beaux-Arts from 1924. His works mainly illustrate the landscapes of the North, Brittany, Savoy and the area around Le Havre.
Our painting immortalizes a sunset over the countryside, highlighting chromatic work that lends all its intensity to the sky, adorned with clouds in pink and orange hues, reminiscent of the Impressionist movement.
From 1924, Gonthier exhibited regularly in Paris, notably at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Artistes Indépendants.
A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Musée d'Art moderne in Le Havre.
