The work, in excellent condition is presented in a beautiful gildedLouis XIV style, measuring 61 cm by 83 cm and 38 cm by 61 cm for the canvas alone.
It depicts a landscape in the highlandsof the Ventoux region, where the artist used to live. In the center, a row of fruit treestrees, probably almond trees, and the silhouette of aand the silhouette of a peasant woman a few meters from a traditional building.
The work is signed lower right.
Fauvist precursor and member of the Nouvelle écoled'Avignon, in 1892, Seyssaud sent his work to the Indépendants and theChamps de Mars. From the outset, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, at the Parc deBouteville in 1897, and at Vollard in 1899. He achieved all the success hehe had hoped for. His art aroused the strongest reactions in the press. For heas a critic of the time wrote, "an entirely new notenew note". As another critic put it, "These are spontaneous thingsspontaneous things that owe nothing to anyone, and should therefore be appreciatedof those who love the valiant, energetic candor of a man who had no masterhad a master and doesn't want to have a boss".Vollard offered Seyssaud a contract, but Seyssaud, out of loyalty to his friend andfriend and Marseille dealer François Honnorat. In 1901, every year heexhibited at Bernheim Jeune. Bernheim Jeune, like Vollard, offered to takehis interests. Seyssaud still preferred to reject this association, however richrich in consequences.-After 1911, Seyssaud stopped exhibiting at Bernheim, choosing Rosemberg(1914), Druet (1924), 1927), Printz (1929), Georges Petit (1930), Javal etBoudeaix (1933), Printz (1933).-He exhibited in Marseille in 1905, 1907, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1928, 1947, 1949.-In Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Tunis, etc...-In America in 1947.-Seyssaud takes part in official exhibitions in Berlin (1903), Amsterdam(1912), Barcelona (1917, 1929), New-York (1929), Wiesbaden (1921), Ghent (1922),Stockolm (1923), Geneva (1923,1942), Turin (1951), Exposition Coloniale deMarseille (1922), Internationale de Paris (1937), Préfecture de Marseille(1949), Biennale de Menton (1951), Musée Cantini (1954), Zurich (1955), Musée GallieraGalliera (1956), Oxford, London, Edinburgh (1957), Aix-en-Provence, Festival(1957).-State purchases for Luxembourg (1903, 1904, 1921, 1927, 1929,1930). For the Museums of Marseille (1908, 1919), Lyon (1924), Avignon(1920), Préfecture des Bouches-du-Rhône (1933), Mairie de Saint-Chamas (1909),Musée National d'Art Moderne (1957).-He is represented at the Petit Palais, the Musée d'Art Moderne, the Musée Léon Dierx(Reunion Island), in Moscow. Also in Dijon, Nîmes, Aix-en-Provence,Arles, Grenoble, Montpellier, Albi, etc... He has won various medals andawards. Among them, the Gold Medal at the Exposition Internationale de1937 in Paris, and that of the city of Marseille in 1947. The Grand Prix desprovinces in 1951, at the Biennale de Menton. Seyssaud was an Officerof the Légion d'Honneur since 1947. Posthumous exhibitions includeretrospectives at Musée Calvet (1953), Musée Cantini (1954), Salon d'Automne,Château d'Arbon in Switzerland (1955), Musée Galliera.-His paintings feature in the collections of Gustave Geffroy, Frantz Jourdain,Vollard, Georges Feydeau, Sacha Guitry, Armand Dayot, Lucien Poincaré, MauriceSarraut, Albert Sarraut, Paulhan, Bernheim, Estaunié, Descaves, Morsolf,Fernand Bouisson, Drouant, André Marie, the Marquis de Biron, the Princesse de laTour d'Auvergne, de Wagram etc.
