In good condition, it is signed lower right. Jules Monge was a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel, Edouard Detaille and Saintpierre in Marseille. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1881 to 1933 and obtained many successes there, Honorable Mention in 1881 with "Portrait de M. Boudouresque de l'Opéra", 3rd Class Medal and Bashkirtseff Prize in 1911 with "les Tanagras" and Gold Medal in 1923 "Archaeologist". He also exhibited in provincial towns (Marseille, Versailles). He produced many portraits and military scenes. During the inter-war period he visited republican China and painted scenes of daily life.
