Magnificent summer light enhanced by the play of shadows in the foregroundin the foreground, the bucolic ambience of the old houses and the colorsof 19th-century Provence for this work by Avignon painter Paul Saïn.
The work is presented in an elegant carved and gilded frame (of which theMarie-Louise will be restored) measuring 92.5 cm by 70 cm and 73 cm by 50 cmfor the canvas alone.
It depicts a farmer feeding grain to her hensin a village street, certainly Gordes in the Luberon, where the artist washabits.
In excellent condition, the painting is signed lower right.
A reassuringly peaceful and luminous scene of life, a lovelytestimony to a bygone era.

Paul Saïn studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon, where he won the prize for life drawing, and then in 1873 the Calvet Museum drawing prize.
He received a scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme, from 1877.
He shared a studio with Paul Avril, Esprit Michel Gibelin, Désiré Honoré Bérard, and Jean-Baptiste Hugues.
He exhibited mainly landscapes and seascapes at the Salons of 1879, 1887, 1889, 1890, and 1892. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1895. In 1900, Paul Saïn painted the canvases Avignon and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon for the restaurant Le Train Bleu at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. The city of Avignon has named a street after him. The town of Saint-Céneri-le-Géreia commissioned the sculptor Christian Malézieux to create a bronze bust of Paul Saïn, which now adorns the main street of the village.
