This elegant, typically 16th-century composition depicts the episode from the Gospel of Saint Luke in which the infant Jesus is presented at the Temple in Jerusalem. The scene is truly captivating: the Virgin lifts her Son with both hands and presents him to Simeon. While a stunned Joseph stares, eyes wide open, at the stern figure of the bearded old man, the Child recoils in fear, turning toward his Mother, who watches him tenderly and protectively. Not far from the group, a young woman—whom tradition identifies as the midwife who assisted Mary during childbirth—takes part in the solemn ritual.
The work is of excellent craftsmanship and displays the unmistakable characteristics of 16th-century Venetian painting.
There are clear references to the famous compositions of Giovanni Bellini, whose extraordinary pictorial language influenced virtually all Venetian artists of the 16th century.
The color palette consists exclusively of warm hues in shades of yellow, ochre, and brown, with the sole exception of the Virgin’s blue cloak.
The work has already been cleaned and perfectly re-framed, and it is in excellent condition.
It comes complete with a beautiful carved and gilded frame.
