The painting depicts a vast nocturnal landscape, typical of the Mediterranean hinterland, where a cylindrical tower stands out as the central feature, rising in the center of the canvas amidst a series of fortified villages. The scene is illuminated from the side by the glow of moonlight, creating a very evocative chiaroscuro effect. The painting is attributed to the Flemish landscape painter Pieter Mulier, known as Cavalier Tempesta following his stay in Italy, where he worked and developed artistically—first in Rome, then in Genoa, drawn by the sea and the Ligurian landscape, and finally in Milan until his death. His works reflected his restless spirit and were divided mainly between depictions of landscapes characterized by an unstable and never serene atmosphere, and seascapes that were always stormy—often set at night and in the moonlight.
The canvas presented here depicts a wide-angle night view and stands out for its pleasant sense of tranquility, with silent fishermen along the waterway enlivening and adding color to the scene.
