The Education of the Virgin is a very common subject in 17th-century painting and depicts Saint Anne instructing the Child Mary in the Holy Scriptures.
The large canvas shown here depicts the scene in a more complex and intriguing manner, featuring the appearance of God the Father surrounded by jubilant little angels as he blesses Mother and Daughter, with Joachim standing nearby, gazing in awe at the divine vision.
The composition is highly refined and excellently structured, with striking three-dimensionality.
The artist arranges the three figures in the foreground to form a diagonal line across the canvas, portraying them with clear definition both in full face and in profile, and imbuing them with chiaroscuro contrasts to make them more vivid.
The stern figure of God the Father and the group of cherubs, on the other hand, are painted with less detail, avoiding strong contrasts to convey the sensation of a supernatural event.
The result is striking: the canvas depicts the two scenes as connected and very close to one another, yet distinctly separated into two different contexts—one earthly and one divine.
This superbly executed work belongs to the Lombard Baroque painting tradition of the mid-17th century and displays the pictorial and coloristic characteristics of the Milanese master Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (Milan 1609–1662), who demonstrates in this painting his penchant for elegant, perfectly blended hues, devoid of bright colors and forced color combinations.
The painting is in excellent condition, complete with a slender gilded frame.
