Copper plate mounted on a protective wooden panel.
This painting depicts the encounter between Christ, on His way to Calvary, and Saint Veronica, elegantly dressed and shown offering the Holy Veil. The composition follows the narrative structure typical of the Flemish School of the late seventeenth to early eighteenth century, with a rocky setting, a structured procession, and a strong focus on gesture and costume.
Veronica’s figure dominates the foreground and represents the central iconographic moment of the scene. Around her unfolds the traditional procession: soldiers, attendants, and mourning women, rendered in the lively and detailed manner associated with Flemish devotional painting of the Baroque period.
The use of oil on copper reflects a well-established Northern European tradition that favoured this smooth, durable support for its ability to hold fine details. The copper plate is mounted on a wooden panel, a customary method of protection.
There are small retouchings in some areas, consistent with the age of the work and not affecting the overall readability.
Later 19th-century frame.
